Our holistic
approach
We use the word holistic with confidence β and with a clear definition. It means we treat the whole animal, use every tool available.
We use the word holistic with confidence β and with a clear definition. It means we treat the whole animal, use every tool available.
These are the foundations of how we approach every patient β from a routine consultation to our most complicated medical cases.
A limping dog deserves more than a pain jab. A cat with bald patches is more than a skin problem. We look at the whole patient β their history, diet, lifestyle, pain levels, mental state, and overall health β to understand what's really going on.
This takes longer. It requires more questions, more listening, and sometimes more investigation. We think it leads to better outcomes.
Conventional veterinary medicine is extraordinary. Pharmaceuticals, surgery, diagnostics β these are the foundation of what we do. But they are not the ceiling.
At TWC, we also have access to western veterinary acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, stem cell therapy, western veterinary herbal medicine, and nutritional medicine. Where the evidence supports using these alongside or instead of conventional approaches, we do.
Holistic does not mean anti-conventional. Every vet at TWC is qualified and RCVS registered. We treat, we prescribe, we operate, we refer when needed.
Holistic means we don't stop there. It means a pet with chronic pain gets pharmaceutical pain management and acupuncture and hydrotherapy and nutritional support β because all of them together work better than any one alone.
Not every patient needs every tool. But having all of them available β and knowing when and how to use each one β is what makes a truly integrated approach possible.
The Veterinary Wellness Centre was founded by Dr Miriam Main BVM&S MRCVS, a graduate of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh. Miriam's clinical interests include nutrition, western veterinary herbal medicine, western veterinary acupuncture, and pain management.
Miriam is a former trustee of the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation. She opened TWC in Newcraighall in 2024 with a simple belief: that the best veterinary care uses everything available β conventional and complementary β and puts the animal's quality of life at the centre of every decision.
About TWC βThe Veterinary Wellness Centre is a fantastic surgery. It is such a breath of fresh air to have vets who treat your animals holistically rather than just by body part. They give clear, concise advice and are open to discussion regarding treatment to find a solution that is beneficial to both human and animal. They are very good with both cats and dogs. I would, and have, recommended The Veterinary Wellness Centre to other pet owners. Keep up the good work TVWC!
Whether your pet needs a routine health check or a complex integrated care plan, we're here for both β and everything in between. Serving Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian.
